Tartuffe at The Courtyard Theatre Tartuffe Flyer

This latest adaptation of Moliere’s classic comedy is the funniest yet. Set against a background of political and religious intrigue in late 17thC England, this production is a hilarious and very modern mixture of hypocrisy, envy, greed, sexual desire and family politics.

Claiming to be a “Man of God” Tartuffe worms his way into the household of Sir George Young, a wealthy City merchant trader who, egged on by his domineering mother, is desperate to be seen to be good as well as rich.

Not content with living off Sir George’s money, seeking his daughter’s hand in marriage, Tartuffe then tries to molest his wife and turn the family out of their home.

The rest of the family are deeply shocked by Tartuffe’s antics and Sir George’s gullibility and they plan their revenge. Led by the cunning and feisty maid servant Dorine, they hatch a plot to expose Tartuffe and rescue the family’s good name.

A timeless tale of human vanity and frailty which will have you rolling with laughter.
